I recently reconnected with a friend who I met when we were at Northwestern’s summer school program in college—so it was a while ago J and we picked up right where we left off –catching up.
When we were talking on the phone, I also spoke with her husband and we talked about their wedding and it seemed like yesterday when we last spoke. They are truly wonderful people!
He is a very successful real estate broker and he told me a story that is so powerful and everyone can learn from it–whatever kind of business you are in.
One afternoon he received a call from a woman who left a message: “I am in Chicago now—at a hotel with my 2 children and I am unemployed and I need to find a house’.
He called her back—they had a conversation and he agreed to meet with her and help her.
It turns out that when they did meet and he found her a home that she liked—he asked her—“ do you have money for the deposit, how will you pay going forward, etc’, etc”—all the questions one would ask in this type of transaction.
Fast forward—‘yes, she is happily married and to the new coach of The Chicago Bulls and they were relocating”. She later said to my friend,-‘thank you so much—you will be hearing from my husband”.
She also said "Before I called you, I called five other brokers and left that same message and no one returned my call.’
Well—now he has already gotten their home, and the husband did call and so have several of the players on the team…. So my friend is an even busier broker now and more referrals keep coming.
When he told the initial part of the story to the other 90 brokers in his office, they all said—‘you called her, what a waste, etc, etc’—He then relayed the rest of the story. Who is laughing now????
As we know—never judge a book by its cover—you just never know and also there was a lot of karma here. Do the right thing and things have a way of coming back to you.
