What You Say and What You Mean To Say

My good friend Paul Hansen who is one of the best relationship builders I know and also a guru when it comes to his work, and I were presenting this week in Denver at the American Cancer Society.

Being with this group of amazing people and hearing what they do and some of the most touching and wonderful stories were shared all with the goal of how to we continually fight to get rid of this dreaded disease.

Paul–being the jovial and larger then life personality finished his presentation with a wonderful anecdote that can be a reflection to all of us when we are speaking—do we really mean what we say!!

The story:

A contractor was going through his records and realized that one of his customers had not paid for her extensive window treatments in her home.

He called her up and said: "Ms.X—- I hope you are enjoying the new additions we put on your house and wondered why we have not yet been paid.

She said–"Definitely-we love them."

Perplexed, the contractor then said: "Then why have we not been paid?"

She said—"You told me that they would ‘pay for themselves within the year!’

Remember the next time you use a phrase, common saying or any form of communication–be sure to say what you mean!!! 🙂
