Re-think Everything You Do
Check and double check. More opportunities are ruined through careless mistakes or by trying to do too much at once without focus.
Research also tells us that to do two things at once is to do neither well.
Create your checklist. I have a different one for events and work and constantly upgrade and refine them. Start simple—just have one. For example, say you are going to an industry event today:
- Set a goal-to meet and connect with at least two or three people.
- Be specific. Write out your goal for the event or meeting.
- Have your “elevator intro” so practiced that it rolls off your tongue — for that particular audience. What do you do so the person you meet will say, "Tell me more"?
- Have your tangible and intangible tool kits with you and ready to go, including the following:
- The research you’ve done before the event
- Eye contact—look at someone as if he or she is the only person there
- Ears open and ready to LISTEN—turn off other “volume” in your head
- Remember body language and check your appearance
- Smile
- Turn off all other equipment
- Business cards handy or your Smart phone handy to exchange information
- Small paper and pen portfolio to write your notes
- Create a “small talk” notebook, which contains anecdotes to stimulate conversation.
- Grooming essentials
- Business card cases—one for yours and one for the ones you collect
- Pack your note cards/stationery with stamps so you are ready to write your thank you notes.
I pull this checklist out before every event. I always want to be 120 percent prepared. Our most important power is the power of focus.
