Networking Nugget #242 “How to Recall Names and Jokes When Networking”

This week we are going to look at one of the most frequent questions I get in a workshop — “How do I remember someone’s name?”

My guest today is Jerry Bellune, Entrepreneur, Editor, Publisher; Author.. and the list continues.

Jerry and I ‘met’ years ago via the Internet and have been business friends ever since. I always learn something from Jerry’s posts and books.

Here is how he cracked the code on remembering both names and jokes:

“After I sent MaryJo Briggs Austin, a fellow author and member of our Toastmasters club, a video of a wonderful storytelling joke, she responded that she is a terrible joke teller.

My reply: Most of us have trouble remembering the punch line or leaving out a detail in telling a joke that sets up the punch line. What I did to overcome this was what I did in working to remember people’s names.
I said their names a lot. It was music to their ears.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, MaryJo” or “I’d love to know more about what you do for your clients, MaryJo” or “May I have your card, MaryJo?” etc. After that, I can recall her name by imagining what she looks like.

When you hear a good joke you want to remember to:

  1. Repeat the punch line in your brain and write it down.
  2. Tell it to someone who hasn’t heard the joke.
  3. Find others and tell them the joke.

By the time you’ve used someone’s name in conversation 3 times or told the joke 3 times, you’ve locked it into your memory.”

**** A big thank you to Jerry for this simple and effective strategy to remember names and jokes. Jerry has a free gift for all my readers:
