My friend Annmarie Woods – Regional Vice President of Mainstay Investments who is called “The Idea Lady” by all who know her and a top business development expert shared a wonderful story about how you never know when a referral will come to fruition.
As Annmarie related the story-:”A few weeks ago one of my clients shared with me that his son was going to ask his girlfriend to marry him. I asked if he had gotten a ring. He said, he had not and was unsure of where to go and what to look for. I mentioned that my brother-in-law, George, and my former husband, John, had purchased engagement rings from a gentleman in the Diamond District. Both of our rings were appraised (by an independent appraiser) for exactly what we were told. I recall the appraiser telling me that I got a “great deal!” I told my client that if his son needed a referral to please let me know. A few day later, his son reached out to me and wanted to speak to the jeweler.
While I have not been in touch with Peter the Jeweler in 26 years, I sent a message via LinkedIn. He responded immediately and provided his cell number. Peter was grateful for the referral and said he would take good care of him. Three days later I was meeting with my client and he said that he, his wife and son met with Peter over the weekend and a ring was purchased. He raved about Peter and the service they received. Holidays, engagement, great service and a memorable experience….even 26 years later left an impression for a referral and I was happy to give it.”
As we celebrate with our family and friends and begin the new year, always keep in mind that there is no time limit on how someone can leave a great impression and how we will remember them going forward.
We all have the power to do this daily in the type of service we give. Happy New Year!
