Networking Nugget #205 “Why Tell Me More” is Critical as You Network”

Every relationship starts with a conversation after you have engaged. When you say to a new connection as you are starting a conversation,  “Tell me more,” it’s your call to start that conversation . . . a conversation designed to understand their needs, learn about them and start to share what you do.

It is also a reassuring phrase that shows you are interested and want to hear more about what the other person is going to say and you can truly listen and learn. Then it is your turn to contribute, share an idea based on what they said.

I believe this phrase is gold, because it offers a simple way to ask the other person to go deeper into the topic and it is flattering to show that you are interested.

For example:”Tell me more about how that works.” ” Tell me more about your thinking there.” “You mentioned [insert project/challenge/idea]—Tell me more about how you’re approaching that.” Again it  shows you’re interested in more than pleasantries and demonstrates your curiosity in learning about others. Of course, be sincere and authentic and go into every conversation at an event or wherever you are with ‘curiosity’ that you will learn something new and may even connect with someone you will stay in touch with and develop a relationship.

Plus, you can use it for just about everyone. Try it out this week and let me know what develops in the conversation…..
