Summertime is here. The weather is warm and many of us
get inspired to set new personal goals like shedding those winter pounds or
exercising more. It is also a great time to think about setting new goals for
our business relationships. Set a goal for every event or meeting you attend.
When you set a goal, you will feel a sense of business accomplishment when you
leave the meeting. The key is to actually do and accomplish something, so
choose a goal that’s right for you.
For example, I always set a goal that I will meet at
least two new people. I will learn about them, their interests, their
business, and how to follow up. Here’s something to help you remember:
G Go up to at least two people with a goal in mind as you are
speaking with them. Ask yourself, "Would I like to meet with them
further, or is there a way I can help them?" If at an internal meeting,
go up and say hello or reintroduce yourself.
O Observe people with both your eyes and ears. Also be sure to
ask them open-ended questions so that you can learn more about them. I call
this ‘high gain’ knowledge.
A Attitude and Action steps are keys to this tip. Be curious
and eager to learn about people when you attend the meeting. It’s important
to take action instead of waiting for the other person to take the initiative.
L Listen passionately to people. They will reveal their
preferred means and style of communication. Or do what I do—I ask "what
is your preferred method of communication in order for us to stay in
touch?"
S Smile when meeting people, entering a room, or talking on
the phone. A smile is the first step in building rapport. This goes for all of
your internal meetings, sales calls, or customer events. Practice smiling at
three new people every day. (You have my permission to smile at more) J
Put these “GOALS” into practice and your summer will
be off to a great start!
