Today The Rotary of New York had a special treat as we listened to John E. Oden give an inspirational presentation using lessons learned from his book- "Life in The Ring"-Lessons and Inspiration from the Sport of Boxing.
John is a true advocate for the sport of boxing and a former competitve white collar boxer himself. In the business world, he is a principal at a global money management firm traveling through the U.S., U.K. and Asia.
He was instrumental in starting the first boxing program in the New York City school system at the Archimedes Academy in the Bronx and in honor of his participation and advocacy for academics, the program is called the John E. Oden Boxing Scholars and the boxing gym at the school was also named in his honor.
We all learned wonderful lessons listening to the stories of some of the world's greatest boxers and their inspiring stories of life, defeat and success. Everyone was able to walk away with many pearls of wisdom whether you were a boxing lover or not. It applied to everyone. Also–for me, not only did I learn alot— I should have had a pair of these boxing gloves with me this past Friday night when I was mugged on Lexington Avenue. For all my friends that have called and emailed–I am fine—just know that no matter where you are-whatever time of day–be sure to be aware. You never know.
