I am thrilled that my guest blogger this week is my dear friend, Lois Geller, who has one of the most impressive credentials-

Entrepreneur, Direct Marketing Agency owner, Author of numerous books, Branding and Marketing Specialist, Columnist for Forbes and International Speaker and I could go on. To learn more about Lois and how to connect with her to bring her into your organization- her contact information is at the end of her post.

Read what she has to say about Twitter and how she has built up a following of almost 19,000!

Networking
in Social Media.

 Here on the
Nierenblog, I’ve read many great articles about ways to reach out and meet new
people and develop friendships.

 Andrea
Nierenberg is the “Queen of Networking”, after all. We met a long time ago when
we were both studying to be Dale Carnegie instructors. She’s taught me a lot
over the years, but I’ve never really enjoyed going to events and “putting
myself out there” to make contacts for business.

 I guess I’m
challenged because I’m basically shy (except when I’m speaking in front of a
group). So social media is great for me: 1) I can do it in the privacy of my
own office or home, 2) I can speak my mind easier, 3) I love relating to new
people there…and helping them.

 Here are
some of the things I do on Twitter:

  • I meet at
least 5 people each week. I don’t mean follow them, or retweet them….I reach
out and say “hello” to them.

How
do I find them? Same way as in life…someone will recommend them. So often on
Fridays, people write #FollowFriday or #FF and then write out their favorite
Twitter people’s names, like “#FollowFriday my friend @Anierenberg (great
networker), @BobBurg (knows the value of giving), @TLMaurer (often has time to
comment on my blog)…etc”

 I
might follow some of those people and tell them I heard about them on #FF.

  • Sometimes I
ask questions and get lots of great answers. I asked recently about the best
phone service to use…and got dozens of people telling me one they liked. Turned
out I changed my service to theirs.

  • I tweet
about my hopes, my ideas or something I learned.  Giving people new ideas or the opportunity to
    help you always starts relationships.

Many people
I’ve met on Twitter have come from my virtual world to my office to visit with
us, and some I’ve met for coffee or a meal. There have been some people I’ve
referred for jobs (in social media), because I know they’re great people.

Next month
I’m going to meet Sree Sreenivasan whom I’ve watched on TV shows demonstrating
great gadgets. I tweeted him a few years ago saying we were speaking at the
same Convention but I was leaving before his talk.

This time I
tweeted him and said I was staying to hear his talk. He said great and I’d meet
his family there. Love that.
