My good friend, Jerry Bellune looked at my Nugget #246 and said it was fine except– be sure to start the conversation with how you proceed to your introduction.
He is so right and while I discuss that in workshops and in my books, I did not put into the nugget– so here in Jerry’s words:
“Andrea: All of this is right except for one thing – the precede.
You must seize the initiative and ask them first: “What do you do?”or “What brought you here this evening?” or “How might I help you?” etc.
It is critical that you learn 3 key facts about them:
1. What line of work or activity they are involved in.
2. Why they are here today, this evening, etc.
3. What the two of you may have in common.
Armed with that, when they ask, “Now tell me what you do?” you have a good idea of what to say that will connect the two you … or you decide this is NOT a relationship you want to develop.”

Thanks, Jerry for making this crystal clear. ARN
