“Take the high road, there is much less traffic there” is a line I try to constantly put into practice and life and something that my dear father, Dr. Paul would always say to me and my brother and sister.
It is not always easy to do, yet it is SO worthwhile in the end –
When we are networking either with new people or those that are in our universe, critical conversation can come up and it all depends on your reaction and how you handle the situation.
Another one of my favorite lines and one that I have on my computer screen and ties right into “The high road” is:
“The most successful people have teeth marks on their tongues”…..
Look at the following suggestions on taking “The High Road” and let me know your thoughts:
1. People will trust you. Trust is one of the most precious commodities in business and life. It takes years to build up and can be completely lost with one bad interaction. You may win business because others believe they can trust you, however you will most certainly lose business and any future referrals and introductions, if there is even a hint of mistrust. Strive to be a person of trust.
2. People will want to work with you and refer you. Authentic Leaders take the high road and lead by example. Share your principles with your trusted advisors and friends so they truly understand the strength of your character and the discipline it takes to remain on the high road when we often see others taking an alternative route.
3. You will get a steady stream of strategic introductions. We all want to help people we trust and like. Sometimes we know we are right and the other person is not- yet much better to ‘lose the battle and win the war’. Keeping our egos intact will pay high dividends.
.
4. You will gain a lot of respect. People will wonder how you always seem to keep it all together. I heard the line once by Dr.Wayne Dyer- ‘it is better to be kind than right.’
5. You’ll sleep better, be healthier with less stress and have more fun.
“How people treat you is their karma. How you react is yours.” — Wayne Dyer
